A Sprinkling of Stardust
Lisa was having a new website built and struggling to know what to write. You see, as a talent producer and celebrity booker, Lisa’s business is all about her. She’s the face of it, the brains behind it and the only person who can take credit for the glittering roll call of famous faces she’s put on some of Britain’s most watched TV programmes over the past twenty years.
Ant and Dec – tick, This Morning – tick, Parkinson, Lorraine, Celebrity Hunted, Comic Relief, Sport Relief… the list goes on and on.
With names like Sir David Jason, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Adele, Julie Walters, Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry, David Beckham, Judi Dench, Gary Barlow, Gareth Thomas, Daniel Craig, Rhianna and Sir Paul McCartney in her contacts and with BAFTA and NTA awards on her shelf, she had plenty of stories to tell and remarkable achievements to shout about.
But she couldn’t.
Lisa’s not the only one to feel this way. In fact, I’ve lost count of the number of business owners I’ve met who find it hard, almost impossible to showcase their brilliance to the world.
I get it, I really do. I’m the same.
I hate telling my own success stories but thrive on shouting about everyone else’s.
And when I say shout, I don’t mean it literally.
I don’t wade in and force people to ‘big themselves up’ in ways they don’t feel comfortable with – that just wouldn’t be right, and it certainly wouldn’t be authentic.
Instead, we work together to create a tone of voice they’re happy with. A level of ‘me, me, me’ they can tolerate.
That said, if I can see someone’s not blowing their trumpet hard enough, I will step in. After all, it’s my job to show the world how brilliant they are.
A Little Less Modest
So how did I make Lisa a little less modest? We went through her amazing CV together and worked out what qualities, values and experience she needed to showcase. By spending time with her I got to know how she spoke, her tone of voice and most importantly her personality.
She was so easy to get along with, so calm, patient and kind and yet, she had ideas, loads of them, was tenacious and really hard working. These qualities were clearly part of her success story, repeated in testimonial after testimonial and these were the things that, along with her achievements we needed to bring out.
And so, we did. In a way we were both happy with. Using words that spoke volumes to her clients past, present and future.
I think she was happy with the end result…
I certainly was.
